On 11 July 1648 the siege of Pembroke Castle, which had begun eight weeks before, ended in the surrender of the garrison signalling one of the final acts of the English Civil War. William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke (1146-1219) was the embodiment of a medieval knight; dripping in chivalry: a tournament champion, a fierce brave warrior in battle and close confidante to Kings, a Regent of England and a defender of Magna Carta.
